Background
I am enrolling in a language-learning program this summer in Taiwan. My goal is to self-study and pass the placement test into the second level so I can benefit more from the immersion. These summer programs run for 3 months with 15 instructional hours a week, and the second level class is normally achieved after one summer of class. Passing the first level class is benchmarked with HSK3 (old), B1 level in CEFR or TOCFL band novice. I can also choose to just take the TOCFL band novice test and submit a passing score.
I have briefly studied Chinese before (Duolingo). At my peak, around a year ago, I was a little below HSK 1 level. I started studying again for this placement test around a month ago. I am currently at chapter 3 out of 10 chapters I need to complete in the textbook to get through the material.
Definitions
Passing the test is defined as a score that lets me enroll in the second level course. Test date is not yet finalized (it will be in late April/ early May), but market will resolve as soon as I get my score back.
Considerations
I am a full-time university student
I have a job and a research position at a local lab
I have a fluent Chinese-speaking friend helping me study
Much of my previous Chinese learning was done with simplified characters, this test will be in traditional
I will bet on this market for personal motivation. I would not have made this market if I didn’t think the odds are close to 50 right now. Feel free to ask any questions.
