Feb 19, 11:23pm: Will a novel prize be awarded for the invention of AGI before 2050? → Will a Nobel prize be awarded for the invention of AGI before 2050?
AGI could be humanity's last invention
Yes. And?
The Nobel prizes are given from the earnings of the estate of Alfred Nobel. They are given in the five categories Nobel stipulated in his will. I am Brazilian, maybe you are as well, so we are not really acquainted with the concept of people just doing what they're supposed to do. The Swedish Academy (or the Norwegian one, in the case of the Peace Prize) are supposed to follow Nobel's will, and the way to do so is by awarding the prizes to the people who they judge the most deserving according to the terms of the will. That's what they're supposed to do, so that's what they do.
One would have to stretch the definition really really really much to make the invention of AGI (which, yes, is humanity's crowning achievement if it doesn't kill us all) fit any of the prizes.
It might be that AGI makes relevant achievements in, or even completely solves, all of the subjects of the Prize, and thus becomes itself a laureate, or maybe its creators get awarded based on the physics/chemistry/etc discoveries of the AI system. But that's not what the question is asking - the question is asking if the prize will be awarded for inventing AGI. You're asking if something like that is the reason either Academy will give for awarding the Prize (all their decisions are given a specific reason). The answer to that is clearly no (P > 99%). This is conditional on the Academies continuing to work free from influence/coercion from AI, of course - a "business as usual" scenario from their points of view.
