According to news in Helsingin Sanomat, the strategy of Helen (Helsinki Energy) includes a nuclear power plant in Helsinki that should be operational in 2036. This would be necessary to replace burning fuels for district heating. Burning coal should end by the end of 2025, after which the plans are to burn wood during a transitional stage.
The Orpo cabinet has promised to ease the nuclear regulations for small modular reactors. The most recently completed nuclear project in Finland, Olkiluoto 3, was famously delayed from the originally planned date of 2009 to 2023, but it was a huge reactor.
