The way to solve this is stick it on a university maths exam, or textbook, and someone fresh and clever will solve it because they don't know it is hard.

@Undox My undergraduate CS math lecturers tried that. They put the Collatz conjecture at the bottom of the first problem set in the textbook. I wonder if they were trying too hard a problem at too low a level...
