Taking some inspiration from @firstuserhere, I’ll be using Manifold to keep myself publicly accountable for my 2024 personal annual goal. Will I learn how to fly a plane in 2024 (to be determined by having done 10+ flights)? I’ll keep this post updated as I take to the skies.

For some context, this decade I’ve set myself annual goals (from ‘21), which have all gone quite well!

  • In 2020 and 2021, I took weekly voice lessons and have been singing daily since.

  • In 2022 I took a half-semester photography class and have been taking pictures on my mirrorless ever since.

  • In 2023 I took a motorcycle class, got my permit, commuted to work weekly, took the DMV class and should get my license later this month.

My 2024 goal is to learn how to fly a plane. To make this measurable, 10 flights seems like a fair meter to take this goal seriously (especially with the cost of flying). I personally need to be the pilot during the session, and at minimum the plane must takeoff for the session to count. If I do 3 takeoffs during a single flight session, this only counts as 1.

I’ve never flown a plane before and am actually decently afraid of heights, which hasn’t stopped me from skydiving or being a flying trapeze artist. I’m fairly optimistic about hitting this goal, and going 4/4 on my annual goal streak.

I also live in an area with year round fair weather, so it’s reasonable to assume that I could fly in any arbitrary month of the year.

Tiny delay here, but I just got my motorcycle license this morning. Nothing’s stopping my pilot lessons now!
