California sports betting is not legal. All efforts to legalize the activity in the state so far have been in vain, and what’s next for California sports betting is unclear.
Stakeholders in the state have said it could be at least another couple of years before California is close to legalizing sports betting. The launch process, which could take a year or more, can only begin once criteria are established.
California resoundingly rejected the notion of all types of sports betting in November 2022. The ballot revealed that opposition to the online betting measure was even stronger than it was for retail sportsbooks at tribal casino locations.
Fewer than one out of every five California voters said that they wanted online sports betting. It’s not clear how those who do want online sportsbook promotions and legal betting apps in the state are going to overcome such a strong base of contention.

Stakeholders in the state have hinted that legalization may not happen until at least 2026, and that retail sports betting is more likely to launch before online betting. Indian Gaming Association conference chair Victor Rocha suggested online sports betting may not go live until 2028.
