Will I be diagnosed with autism before 2026?

I've thought of myself as autistic for a long time but never pursued a formal diagnosis. I anticipate making contact with a doctor capable of making such a diagnosis in the relatively near future, so I don't think the end date of the market should be particularly relevant to traders.

Some evidence in favor:

  • good at math, bad at people

  • intense sensitivity to certain stimuli: I won't eat any salad dressings. Being near music amplifiers makes me feel like I'm dying; I unironically describe someone carrying a boombox on public transit as attacking me with a sonic weapon

  • I got a hand-me-down iPod when I was 7 and listened to the song "Eleanor Rigby" thousands of times before putting another song on

  • When I do consume music (not that much), I tend to do it in a similar way as above; I will listen to a song hundreds or thousands of times in the background without any other songs in between

  • I read One Hundred Years of Solitude something like 6-10 times in high school

  • To occupy myself on long car rides as a kid, I would find the prime factorization of the license plate numbers on passing cars (I'm not a mental calculator or anything, this would take me a while)

  • a coworker at a SWE job once brought up my habit of wearing gym shorts to work (they're comfy). Several years later it occurred to me that he was probably trying to tell me to stop wearing gym shorts to work

  • Tendency to infodump, though when I was roughly high-school aged I realized I should pay attention to whether my counterparty was actually interested in what I was saying, so I'm better about this now

Some evidence against:

  • I don't have to cut tags off shirts, as a counter to the salad dressing / loud music thing

  • no stimming behavior, as far as I can tell

  • I really like hugs

  • I asked my mom recently if she ever worried her sons were autistic and she seemed surprised by the question

I'm generally willing to answer further questions in the comments, though I reserve the right not to answer questions that are too personal.

Well, all people with autism are different - I for one only don't like loud noises and don't pick up on social cues (and fidget, like a lot) so idk man - im betting yes tho... the evidence for says a lot -- one question tho- do you like, really, really like maths, or anything in general?

I really like math; in college I majored in math with minors in physics and computer science. I can spend all day playing video games perfectly happily, though I try not to.

@zax im not sure abt that, but for the bit that you listen to music 1000s of times on repeat, maybe OCD? not sure tho

Are you in a country where the waiting lists for autism diagnosis are several years?

No. Those exist?

@zax I live in the UK and I'm somewhat sure that is the case here, thus I have to make do without diagnosis

Common third world country L

are you certain it’s a good idea to seek diagnosis?

What would the problem be?

How’s this resolved if you never l see a doctor for a diagnosis before market close? Do you plan to?

I'd resolve to NO in that case since no diagnosis.

What do you hope to gain out of a formal diagnosis?
