Each year, human activities release more carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. The concentration of carbon dioxide in Earth’s atmosphere is currently at nearly 417.06 parts per million (ppm) and rising; representing a 47 percent increase since the beginning of the Industrial Age, when the concentration was near 280 ppm, and an 11 percent increase since 2000, when it was near 370 ppm. The rates at which fossil fuels are being burnt to produce energy, which natural processes like photosynthesis, and ocean outgassing can no longer cope to offset these high rates of releasing the greenhouse gas into the atmosphere. It is not surprising that natural processes can no longer sustain us, considering human action in deforestation, veld fires, and the ocean has absorbed enough carbon dioxide to lower its pH by 0.1 units. I have no doubt by 2100 the carbon dioxide concentration would have exceeded 600ppm.
